How Many Days Do You Need for a Kenya Safari?

The honest answer is that it depends on how many parks you want to see, because in Kenya the driving between them takes time. Amboseli and Ol Pejeta are each four to five hours by road from Nairobi, and the Masai Mara is about 250 km away. On a short trip, the first and last days are mostly travel.

A rule of thumb from our own itineraries:

  • One day gets you Nairobi National Park or Lake Naivasha.
  • Three to four days gets you one park, done properly.
  • About a week gets you several parks, or a safari and then the beach.
  • Two weeks gets you most of Kenya, ending on the coast.

One day

Four trips leave Nairobi and come back the same day, from USD 125 per person: a morning in Nairobi National Park, the park plus the Giraffe Centre, the park plus the elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre, or a walk and boat ride at Lake Naivasha. Our day trips guide compares them.

Three to four days: one park

Trip Length Where From
Amboseli Safari 3 days / 2 nights Amboseli, for elephants beneath Kilimanjaro USD 720
Explore Ol Pejeta 3 days / 2 nights Ol Pejeta Conservancy, for rhinos USD 893
Witness the Wildebeest Migration 4 days / 3 nights The Masai Mara USD 917

On a three-day trip, the middle day is your full day in the park; the first and last days include four to five hours on the road each way. The extra night on the Mara trip buys a second full day, which is why we think four days is the minimum there.

About a week: several parks, or safari and beach

Trip Length Where From
The Great Lakes & Masai Mara 7 days / 6 nights Lakes Nakuru, Elementaita and Naivasha, then the Masai Mara USD 1,436
The Great Tuskers 8 days / 7 nights Amboseli, Tsavo West and Tsavo East USD 1,836
Explore Tsavo National Park & Diani 8 days / 7 nights Three nights in Tsavo, then four on Diani Beach USD 2,215

A week is where Kenya starts to open up. The Great Lakes trip moves a short distance each day, 50 to 60 km between some of the lakes, before the longer drive into the Mara. The Great Tuskers follows elephant country from Amboseli into Tsavo. Tsavo & Diani starts in Mombasa rather than Nairobi (Nairobi's Wilson Airport at the Platinum level), which suits anyone who wants to end a safari on the beach.

Two weeks: most of Kenya

The Ultimate 16-Day Kenya Safari & Diani Escape, from USD 4,577, travels through Ol Pejeta, Samburu, the Aberdares, Lake Nakuru, the Masai Mara and Lake Naivasha, then flies from Nairobi to the coast for three all-inclusive nights on Diani Beach. The return flight between Nairobi and Ukunda is included.

It is the only way on our books to see Samburu's northern species, such as Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk, alongside the Mara's big cats in one trip.

Climbing a mountain instead

Treks are counted differently, because the days are about acclimatisation. The Mount Kenya Trek takes four days, from USD 742. On Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, our routes take five to eight days, from USD 1,880; the extra days improve your chance of reaching the summit. Our Kilimanjaro routes guide explains the choice.

So how many days?

If you have one day, you can still see lions. If you have three or four, pick one park and do it properly. If you have a week, combine parks or add the beach. And if you can find two weeks, you can see most of Kenya. Every trip is compared side by side in the Trip Guide.

Starting prices are per person, checked on 29 September 2026. Each trip page always shows the current price for your group size and season.

Common questions

Is three days enough for a Kenya safari?

Three days is enough for one park. Amboseli and Ol Pejeta are four to five hours by road from Nairobi, so a three-day trip gives you one full day in the park.

How many days do I need for the Masai Mara?

At least four days including travel, which gives two full days in the reserve. The Mara is about 250 km by road from Nairobi.

Can I combine a Kenya safari and the beach in a week?

Yes. Explore Tsavo National Park & Diani is 8 days: three nights in Tsavo and four on Diani Beach, from USD 2,215 per person.

What is the longest Safari Boyz safari?

The Ultimate 16-Day Kenya Safari & Diani Escape, from USD 4,577 per person, covering Ol Pejeta, Samburu, the Aberdares, Lake Nakuru, the Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha and three nights on Diani Beach.

Can I do a Kenya safari in one day?

Yes. Four day trips leave Nairobi and return the same day, from USD 125 per person, including a morning game drive in Nairobi National Park.
